Dear Applicant:

Thank you for your interest in Word in Season Ministries’ James J. Bradley Scholarship for the Academic Year 2024-2025. We appreciate your dedication to furthering your education and commend your hard work.

As part of Word in Season Ministries continuing effort to recognize achievement, applications are being accepted for the James J. Bradley scholarship. The scholarship program consists of three categories for applicant selection: High School Graduates, Current College Students, and Continuing Education. Each applicant will be evaluated based on predetermined criteria to ensure a fair and impartial selection process. This scholarship is a service-oriented, achievement-based opportunity awarded to eligible applicants in good academic standing who are committed to pursuing their educational goals. Applicants are recognized for their capacity to serve in ministry, as well as their academic accomplishments. The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage and promote the attainment of higher educational goals for students who have demonstrated the aforementioned qualities.

Applicants must meet the requirements for their selected category; otherwise, their application will not be considered.

The application package must be submitted to education@mywism.com, by the deadline date of Sunday, May 11, 2025. Please make sure you read and complete all items prior to submission of your materials, any ommission of required documentation will forfeit your application.  

The Scholarship Committee will begin reviewing application packages Monday, May 12, 2025. No late submissions will be accepted. The scholarship recipients will be announced at our Graduation Sunday Service, on June 1, 2025.    

 

Statement of Affirmation: 

I am applying for the James J. Bradley Scholarship for the Academic Year 2024-2025. I also agree to supply all academic records and other supporting documents requested by the Scholarship Committee, and I understand that failure to do so will disqualify me from further consideration for a scholarship. Moreover, I understand that any false or misleading information and/or statements will disqualify me from further consideration for a scholarship.

     To provide financial assistance and encouragement to students who are active members of Word In Season Ministries in pursuing their higher educational goals. THE SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE of Word In Season Ministries stresses the importance of education as a tool for success and the need for our youth to conduct themselves in a Christ-like manner and to be witnessing examples to other young people.

Graduating High School Senior Award

  • Must be a graduating senior or General Educational Development (GED) recipient for the current school year 
  • Must be a current and active member of Word In Season Ministries for one calendar year
  • Must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 
  • Must submit a letter of recommendation from your current WISM ministry leader
  • Must submit a typed essay, see question 10 (minimum of one page double-spaced, not exceeding two pages);
  • Must submit an unofficial high school transcript
  • Must submit college acceptance letter from a college/university 
  • Must submit two letters of recommendation (non-relative)
  • Must have 20 hours of documented community service (signed by supervisor overseeing the community service hours), i.e. extra-curricular activities/clubs/sports & student organizations 

 

 

 

Current College Students Continuing Education Award (i.e. Vocational, Associate Program, Bachelor Program)

  • Must be enrolled in an undergraduate program at an accredited vocational school, college, or university 
  • Must be a current and active member of Word In Season Ministries for one calendar year;
  • Must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 
  • Must submit a typed written essay, see question 11 (minimum of one page double-spaced, not to exceed two pages) 
  • Must submit two letters of recommendation (non-relative) 
  • Must submit a letter of recommendation from your current WISM ministry leader or school ministry leader confirming active ministry involvement within past year 
  • Must submit a current copy of unofficial college transcript (award decision pending receipt of final unofficial transcript) 
  • Must be a full-time student with a minimum 12 credit hours for each semester of the 2022-2023 academic year
  • Must have 20 hours of documented community service (signed by supervisor overseeing the community service hours), i.e. extra-curricular activities/clubs/sports & student organizations 

 

 

Postgraduate/Continued Education Award

  • Must be enrolled in a postgraduate program at an accredited institution.

  • Must be a current and active member of Word in Season Ministries for at least one calendar year.

  • Must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0.

  • Must submit a typed essay (minimum one page, double-spaced; maximum two pages). See question 11 for details.

  • Must submit two letters of recommendation from non-relatives.

  • Must submit a letter of recommendation from your current WISM ministry leader or school ministry leader confirming active ministry involvement within the past year.

  • Must submit an acceptance or attendance letter from the institution you are enrolled in for the current or upcoming academic year.

  • Must be a full-time student, enrolled in a minimum of 9 credit hours each semester for the current academic year.

  • Must have completed at least 20 hours of documented ministry service within the past year, with documentation signed by the ministry supervisor. Acceptable ministry service includes church activities, outreach programs, or other service-oriented ministry roles.

Recommendation Letter Requirements:

  1. Ministry Leader

    • The letter should detail the applicant’s involvement in ministry activities, including the specific roles and responsibilities they have undertaken.

    • The recommender should describe the scope and impact of the applicant’s ministry service, emphasizing their dedication, commitment, and contribution to the church or community outreach programs.

    • The letter should highlight any specific projects, programs, or events the applicant has participated in or led, with particular attention to how their service has benefited others or advanced the ministry’s mission.

 

  1. Additional Recommendation letters (college/continued education only)

    • The letter should provide insight into the applicant’s leadership abilities, such as their capacity to guide, motivate, and inspire others within the ministry or related settings.

    • The recommender should describe the applicant’s leadership style, their ability to work with teams, and their effectiveness in delegating tasks, solving problems, and handling challenges in ministry contexts.

    • Any examples of the applicant taking initiative or leading projects or teams within the ministry are encouraged, demonstrating their ability to take charge and drive positive results.

    • The letter should speak to the applicant’s character, integrity, and work ethic, specifically in a ministry setting.

    • The recommender should provide examples of how the applicant’s personal qualities have contributed to the success of the ministry and their interactions with others in the community.

    • The recommender should clearly state their relationship to the applicant, including how long they have known them and in what capacity (e.g., ministry leader, mentor, supervisor, etc.).

    • The letter should confirm the applicant’s active involvement in the ministry and provide context for their role and contributions.

Write an essay on the following topic (minimum of one typed page double-spaced, not to exceed two pages).

     (High School Gradutes only) 

  • College life offers many freedoms that could lead to unintentional consequences. When you consider your relationship with Christ and your new freedom to make individual choices, how can you ensure you are empowered to make decisions that won’t have a negative impact? 

 

Write an Essay on the following topic (minimum of one page double-spaced, not to exceed two pages). 

     (Returning College Student only) 

  • As you know, college life offers numerous freedoms that could potentially lead to negative consequences. Provide at least one example of a challenge that you've faced as a college student and explain how you resolved the issue while maintaining your Christrian character and commitment. 

Write an Essay on the following topic (minimum of one page double-spaced, not to exceed two pages). 

     (Postgraduates only) 

  • As a continuing education student, you may face unique challenges as you balance your academic, professional, and personal responsibilities. Reflecting on your experience, describe at least one specific challenge you’ve encountered in managing your time, workload, or personal commitments. How did you address this challenge while upholding your values, including your Christian character? Additionally, considering the ongoing freedom and flexibility in your educational journey, what strategies will you implement to ensure that your decisions—whether academic, social, or professional—align with your faith and contribute positively to your growth as both a student and a person of faith?
